Volocopter – The Air Taxi of the Future
Development of Volocopter started in 2011 with the company’s first efforts to test the world’s first manned vertical electric take-off and landing flight. In 2016, the new model called VC200 achieved the first vertical take-off and landing worldwide. This was followed by daily tryouts with professionally certified pilots and efforts to secure permits from authorities to be added to the air traffic list. The company completed several public flights in Helsinki, Stuttgart and Singapore’s Marina Bay. Starting from 2018, Volocopter air taxi emerged as a mature product that attracts a lot of investment.
Investors in the Series C included DB Schenker (Essen), TransLink Capital (California) and Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group (Tokyo), all of which joined existing investor Lukasz Gadowski (Berlin) and btov. (Berlin). With this new investment, the company advisory board also now has two new members: Jochen Thewes, CEO of DB Schenker and Yifan “Frank” Li, Vice President of Geely Holding Group Co, Ltd. The company has offices in Bruchsal, Munich and Singapore , boasting over 150 employees. This new investment will be used to further VoloCity towards certification and help the company to the dissemination of this innovative mobility solution.
